Classroom ExpectationsWant to know what I expect from you in regards to attitude, effort and behavior? Check out our Digital Literacy Classroom Expectations.
Course DescriptionWelcome! The following is a brief explanation of what we will be trying to accomplish during the next eight weeks. Please be aware that this class operates on a self paced basis. Other than direct instruction time, you will be responsible for working to meet your project goals independently. Procrastination is your worst enemy. Try to accomplish your goals early, as you will then have time to work on extra credit.
Keyboarding--The primary keyboarding application we will use in class is TypingClub (nessacus.typingclub.com). Accounts have been created for each student. To access TypingClub, login with your school Google account. Your progress in this application will be automatically reported to me. This part of the course is self directed and is worth 10 points towards your total grade (100). Students start with 6 of 10 points and earn additional points by achieving Net Speed goals shown in the rubric below. Note: You must have a minimum of 10 attempts and 10% progress to qualify for an increased grade. Since the tool is web-based, you can use this on any computer with Internet access.
A Short History of the Internet --The unusual history of what we now know as the Internet will be explored through videos, readings, class discussions and/or activies. Ethical considerations and proper navigation techniques will also be covered. Nerds 2.0.1, A Brief History of the Internet, a three part video series from PBS will be shown if time allows.
Finding & Evaluating Internet Information ---How search tools actually work as well as advanced search techniques that help you find what you are actually looking for will be discussed. We will examine the need for evaluation of Internet information and the criteria by which students should evaluate the information found there. Presentation Tools ---Presenting information to a live audience can be intimidating. However, there are many tools available to help keep you organized and the audience attentive. We will examine many of the Web2.0 tools out there as well as the often misused PowerPoint application. One of these tools will be used in the creation of the multi-media research report on the topic of "Online Safety". Multi-Media Research “Report” --- You will research an a selected topic and create a multi-media portfolio with which you may present the information to your audience. This project will require you to search the Internet, generate and graph data, and assemble a dynamic presentation. Digital Art-- Fridays become special in computer lab as we try out various techniques in a digital art application. Many of the "breakout sessions" will later be integrated into our projects. Other topics may be included if time allows. Grading: Category Percent Quests 15% Keyboarding 10% Project 50% Attitude/Effort/Beh. 25% Google Classroom CodesOnly use these codes when instructed to do so.
